MGM Resorts International has stated it is “well-positioned,” following the passage of a controversial new law in Japan that could allow up to three casino resorts to open up across the nation.

Praising the possibility to drive growth across the travel and tourism sector, especially amongst international travellers, MGM states it has spent “years engaging with cultural and business communities,” following progression of the Integrated Resort Implementation Act.

The company has had a presence in Japan for four years, and explained how it has embarked on expanding its knowledge of the country’s history and heritage through “becoming immersed in Japanese culture”.

In the US the sponsorship of two world premiere Kabuki events, a traditional form of Japanese theatre, has been complimented by the showcasing of Japanese artists across the country.

Jim Murren, Chairman & CEO of MGM Resorts, commented that, “The process has been very deliberate and transparent. We appreciate the high level of social responsibility reflected throughout the process by creating one of the most comprehensive bills of its kind anywhere in the world.

“MGM is proud to have provided academic research and economic analysis as well as facilitating numerous study sessions with experts from around the world. Today’s passage allows us to advance our relationships with key stakeholders and together create a coalition of Japanese business partners who will collectively define a vision for a uniquely Japanese, world-class integrated resort.”

MGM has also been honoured by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), after being awarded with its corporate social responsibility award during the 32nd National Conference on problem gambling in Cleveland.

Recognising commitments made to problem gambling, it follows the nationwide launch of GameSense, integrating responsible gambling education and support into its guest service culture.

Murren added: “We are thrilled to receive this honour from the National Council on Problem Gambling and can’t thank them enough for the incredible work they do in raising awareness in the problem gambling community.

“GameSense has been a tremendous success and is already transforming the way the industry approaches responsible gambling. MGM Resorts is at the forefront of driving the conversation and culture around this important issue, and GameSense ensures responsible gambling education is at the heart of our guest service model at every one of our casinos – worldwide.”
